Mill House, Ballykeeran, Athlone, Co. Westmeath. N37 R733

For Sale

Ballykeeran (from Irish Bealach Caorthainn ‘pass of the rowan tree’) is small village on the Breensford River. The river seems to have been named after this important crossing place at Ballykeeran. Its name in Irish is Áth Bhraoin ‘ford of the Ó Braoins’, and the ford at Ballykeeran once marked the boundary between the territory of the Ó Braoins of Brawny (coextensive with St Mary’s Parish, Athlone) and the barony of Kilkenny West, or Dillons’ Country now comprising the parishes of Tubberclair, Tang, and Drumraney. Following the rebellion of Irish Catholics in 1641 the pass at Ballykeeran was closed by Irish forces as part of the blockade of Athlone in 1641/2. It is difficult to say when a settlement at Ballykeeran first developed – in the mid-17th century it was on the main road from Athlone to Mullingar; maps of that period show a number of substantial buildings on the north bank of the river, around the site of the old mill. The village may have first developed, like Glassan to the north, as a centre of milling. Water mills were first used in Ireland in the 7th century. During the 18th century much larger mills began to be built as the technology developed and the country underwent rapid population growth. By 1837 there were two mills on the Breensford at Ballykeeran; a Corn Mill and a Bleach Mill (for bleaching flax so it could be made into linen

The house itself is a beautiful period house which was originally built in the 1790’s on the banks of the Breensford River and adjacent to the mill in a charming setting surrounded by mature trees. There is a sitting room to the rear with another cosy living area to the front also with fitted solid fuel stove. Also on the ground floor there is the added benefit of a study/office which could be be used as a bedroom or playroom. There is one bathroom on the ground floor and another on the first floor along with 4 double bedrooms.
